Episode 1: Secret of the Black Pearl

Download MP3

Thundarr's journey begins in New York City with the first episode in both production and airing order. He, Ariel, and Ookla meet Gemini, arguably the most iconic of the series' villains. Michael, Noel, and David cover the episode in detail with focus on characterization, world-building, backstory, and the rules of magic.

Behold, the most Jack Kirby moment of the episode!

  1. Great first ep., guys!

Like so many cartoons of the era, there's really no origin save for what we get in the opening theme. It certainly would've benefitted from a five-part mini-series to really establish the world and its characters, but what we get suffices.

I will say that I agree w/those who said ('cuz I can't remember who since it's been a whole 3-4 hours) that a little background on the Sun Sword would've been nice. That he went from slave to the wielder of this magical weapon w/zero explanation just doesn't quite fly w/me.

I agree a little more clarity re: Gemini and his personalities would've helped a great deal. As it stands he seems to switch back and forth between two personas; insincerely effete and psychotic Fred Flintstone.

I didn't think the animation was too bad, though you can see the shortcuts when you really look. As you said, Hanna-Barbera and Filmation were both notorious for cutting corners (in the case of the latter it was in an effort to try and keep the animation Stateside), but w/MOTU Filmation did invest initially in handsome, well done character models and backgrounds that they would then use over and over again. I didn't pick up on that (or the character's limited movements) as a kid.

    Looking forward to St. Louis!

  2. Thanks, Tony! I think it's not so much that the animation isn't bad, as it's still drawn nicely. That can certainly go a long way sometimes.

    1. Yeah, to look at a screengrab it certainly looks okay. It lacks fine detail ('natch), but it has reasonably clean iconic designs.

Really enjoying the podcast, fellas. Along w/Greystoked, Masters of Carpentry (for now) and the one you have to follow, you make up a good chunk of my to listen to list!
